Ingredients

  • 2 pounds Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • ½ to ¾ cup whole milk warmed
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt plus extra for the cooking water
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • Fresh chives or parsley for garnish, optional
  • Roasted garlic optional
  • Sour cream or cream cheese optional

Instructions

  • Wash and peel the potatoes. Cut them into evenly sized pieces, approximately 1–2 inches in size.
  • Place the potatoes in a large pot and cover them with cold water.
  • Add a generous pinch of salt to the water and bring it to a boil over medium-high heat.
  • Reduce the heat and simmer the potatoes for approximately 15–20 minutes, or until they are fork-tender.
  • Drain the potatoes thoroughly in a colander.
  • Return the potatoes to the warm pot and allow them to sit for 1–2 minutes so excess moisture can evaporate.
  • Add the butter and mash the potatoes with a potato masher until the butter melts.
  • Slowly pour in the warm milk while continuing to mash until the potatoes reach your preferred creamy consistency.
  • Add the kosher salt and black pepper. Mix gently and taste, adding more seasoning if needed.
  • Avoid overmixing the potatoes, as this can make them sticky or gluey.
  • Transfer the mashed potatoes to a serving bowl.
  • Garnish with fresh chives, parsley, melted butter, or black pepper, if desired.
  • Serve immediately with gravy, roast chicken, roast beef, meatloaf, turkey, or your favorite main dish.

Notes

  • Best potatoes: Russet potatoes create a light and fluffy texture, while Yukon Gold potatoes provide a naturally buttery flavor.
  • For extra creaminess: Replace part of the milk with heavy cream or half-and-half.
  • For garlic mashed potatoes: Add roasted garlic or gently simmer fresh garlic with the milk.
  • For richer mashed potatoes: Stir in sour cream or softened cream cheese.
  • Storage: Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3–4 days.
  • Reheating: Warm gently on the stovetop or in the microwave, adding a little milk, cream, or butter to restore the creamy texture.
