Ingredients

  • 4 slices sourdough or artisan bread
  • 4 ounces Brie cheese thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons fig jam fig preserves, or fig butter
  • 1 tablespoon softened butter
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1 small handful fresh arugula
  • 2 tablespoons chopped walnuts optional
  • Freshly ground black pepper optional

Instructions

  • Spread butter evenly on one side of each slice of bread.
  • Place two slices of bread on a cutting board with the buttered sides facing down.
  • Spread the fig jam evenly over the bread.
  • Add the sliced Brie, honey, fresh arugula, chopped walnuts, and black pepper, if using.
  • Cover each sandwich with the remaining bread slices, keeping the buttered sides facing outward.
  • Heat a skillet over medium-low heat. Place the sandwiches in the skillet and cook for 3 to 4 minutes, until the bread is golden brown.
  • Carefully flip the sandwiches and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes, until the Brie is melted and the bread is crisp.
  • Remove the sandwiches from the skillet, let them rest for 1 minute, then slice diagonally and serve warm.

Notes

You can use fresh figs instead of fig jam, or add prosciutto, caramelized onions, apple slices, or balsamic glaze for extra flavor. Similar Brie and fig sandwich recipes commonly use fig spread, artisan bread, arugula, prosciutto, and other sweet-savory additions.
