- 1 lb 450g ground beef (preferably lean)
- 1 tablespoon cooking oil vegetable, canola, or avocado
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 1 tablespoon fresh ginger grated
- 3 tablespoons soy sauce low-sodium if preferred
- 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar optional
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes or sriracha optional, for heat
- 1/2 cup water chestnuts diced (optional for crunch)
- 3 green onions chopped (white and green parts separated)
- 1 head butter lettuce or romaine/iceberg, leaves separated and washed
- Optional toppings:
- Toasted sesame seeds
- Chopped peanuts
- Fresh cilantro or mint
- Lime wedges
- Shredded carrots cucumbers, or bell peppers for extra crunch
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the cooking oil and ground beef. Cook, breaking it up with a spatula, for about 5-7 minutes, or until browned and no longer pink. Drain excess fat if needed.
Stir in the minced garlic, grated ginger, and white parts of the green onions. Cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
Add soy sauce, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, and rice vinegar (if using). Stir to coat the beef evenly. Simmer for 2-3 minutes, allowing the flavors to blend. Adjust seasoning with more soy sauce or spice as desired.
Stir in diced water chestnuts (optional) and cook for another minute.
To assemble, spoon the beef mixture into each lettuce leaf. Top with green onions (green parts), sesame seeds, peanuts, cilantro, or your choice of toppings.
Serve immediately with lime wedges on the side for a burst of freshness.
