Ingredients

For the mummy meatballs

  • 16 fully cooked meatballs about 1½ inches wide
  • 1 tube refrigerated crescent-roll dough 8 ounces
  • 16 black olive slices cut in half for eyes, or 32 edible candy eyes
  • 1 cup marinara sauce warmed
  • Nonstick cooking spray optional

Optional for serving

  • Fresh parsley finely chopped
  • Grated Parmesan cheese
  • Crushed red pepper flakes
  • Ranch dressing barbecue sauce, or honey mustard

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • If using frozen cooked meatballs, thaw them according to the package directions or warm them slightly so they are not frozen solid.
  • Unroll the crescent-roll dough onto a cutting board. Press together the perforated seams to make one large sheet of dough.
  • Use a pizza cutter or sharp knife to cut the dough into thin strips, about ¼ inch wide.
  • Wrap two or three dough strips loosely around each cooked meatball. Overlap the strips in uneven directions to create mummy bandages. Leave a small open gap near the top for the eyes.
  • Press the ends of the dough strips lightly into the wrapped dough so they stay in place.
  • Place the wrapped meatballs on the prepared baking sheet, leaving about 1 inch of space between each one. Lightly spray the dough with nonstick cooking spray if desired for extra browning.
  • Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, until the crescent dough is puffed, golden brown, and fully cooked.
  • Remove the mummy meatballs from the oven and let them cool for 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Use a tiny dab of marinara sauce or ketchup to attach two olive pieces or edible candy eyes to each mummy.
  • Serve warm with marinara sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • Meatballs: Use fully cooked frozen, refrigerated, homemade, beef, turkey, chicken, or plant-based meatballs. Thaw frozen meatballs enough that they heat evenly during baking.
  • Dough strips: Cut strips about ¼ inch wide. Do not wrap them too tightly or use too many strips, or the dough may not bake evenly.
  • Eyes: Black olive slices are a savory option. Add candy eyes only after baking and use a dab of sauce or frosting-like edible adhesive to secure them.
  • Make ahead: Wrap the meatballs up to 4 hours ahead, cover, and refrigerate. Bake just before serving.
  • Air fryer: Air fry at 350°F for 6 to 8 minutes, working in batches.
  • Storage: Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
  • Reheating: Reheat at 350°F for 8 to 10 minutes, until hot. Meat-containing leftovers should reach 165°F when reheated.fsis.usda
  • Party tip: For a larger crowd, double the recipe and use two baking sheets. Rotate pans halfway through baking.
