Prepare the grapes: Wash 5-6 green grapes thoroughly under cold water and pat dry with a clean towel. If serving to toddlers under 3 years old, cut each grape in half lengthwise to reduce choking hazard.
Create the caterpillar body: Arrange the green grapes in a curved line in the largest compartment of your bento box. The curved shape mimics how caterpillars move and looks more playful than a straight line.
Prepare the head: Hull the strawberry by removing the green leaves. If using a large strawberry, you can slice it in half and use one half for the head.
Add the face: Place 2 mini chocolate chips on the strawberry for eyes. If chocolate chips won't stick, use a tiny dot of cream cheese or yogurt as "glue."
Create antennae: Insert 2 pretzel sticks into the top of the strawberry. Place 1 blueberry on top of each pretzel stick for the antennae tips.
Attach the head: Place the strawberry at one end of the grape body to complete the caterpillar's head and body.
Add legs: Arrange 6 matchstick carrots along one side of the grape body (3 pairs) to represent the caterpillar's legs.
Fill the cracker compartment: Place 8-10 whole grain crackers in a separate bento box compartment.
Add protein: Place 6-8 small cheddar cheese cubes in another compartment or alongside the crackers.
Pack the vegetables: Add halved cherry tomatoes and cucumber slices to a vegetable compartment.
Include dairy: Add a yogurt pouch or small container of Greek yogurt (2 tablespoons) to a leak-proof compartment.
Optional fruit: Add 2-3 apple slices to a separate compartment for extra fruit variety.
Final touches: If desired, place a small spinach or lettuce leaf under the caterpillar to represent the leaf from the book. Add a tiny piece of chocolate or cheese cube nearby to represent foods from "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" story.
Storage and serving: Close the bento box lid securely. If packing for daycare or school, place the bento box in an insulated lunch bag with an ice pack to keep perishable items fresh until lunchtime. Serve immediately or refrigerate until ready to eat.
