The Cuban Pizza, or pizza Cubana, is a thick-crusted, cheesy delight that originated on the vibrant streets of Havana. Known for its gooey blend of mozzarella and gouda, slightly sweet tomato sauce, and hearty toppings, this homemade version brings the authentic flavors of Cuba straight to your kitchen. For the Dough:
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 ¼ teaspoons 1 packet active dry yeast
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 cup warm water 110°F / 45°C
For the Sauce:
- 1 cup tomato sauce
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon oregano
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the Toppings:
- 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup shredded gouda cheese
- ½ cup diced ham or cooked chorizo optional
- ¼ cup sliced green olives optional
- ¼ cup sliced onions optional
- Oregano or chili flakes for garnish
Prepare the Dough:
In a bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil.
Knead the dough for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Make the Sauce:
In a saucepan over medium heat, combine tomato sauce, olive oil, sugar, oregano, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
Simmer for 5–7 minutes. Set aside to cool.
Assemble the Pizza:
Preheat your oven to 220°C (425°F). If using a pizza stone, place it inside to preheat.
Divide dough into 2–3 portions. Roll into circles about ½ inch thick.
Spread tomato sauce over the base, then sprinkle mozzarella and gouda evenly.
Add your desired toppings (ham, chorizo, olives, onions, etc.).
Bake:
Place the pizzas on a baking tray or preheated pizza stone.
Bake for 12–15 minutes until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbly.
Garnish with oregano or chili flakes, slice, and serve hot.
